Directions to Highland Breeze and Map of Cape Breton
Pleasant Bay, nestled between the Mackenzie and North Mountains, is located on the Northern tip of Cape Breton Island, halfway around the famous Cabot Trail, with Cheticamp to the south and Cape North and Ingonish to the north. Once in Pleasant Bay, you will get to our only crossroads where you turn onto Red River Road and then turn immediately to the left onto the Harbour Road. You can also follow the road signs positioned about a kilometer before the turn and on the Pleasant Bay Harbour sign. Note that you can also follow the Whale Interpretive Centre Signs and Whale Tour Operator signs. We are all on the same 1/2 mile Harbour Rd which leads to a spectacularly un-touched pebble beach that showcases an unforgettable sunset over the horizon! Check out the photos on this site to see one of those sunsets but make sure to not meet the experience once you get here!
By Car from Halifax Airport
Take Provincial Highway 102 in direction of Truro. Follow it for 45 miles until Truro. Then take the Trans Canada 104 east for 100 miles in direction of Antigonish-Cape Breton. After the Canso Causeway, go north on 105 towards Baddeck. You can take the turn off and come on to the Cabot Trail at the Red Barn just before Baddeck and come up through Margaree or go an extra 20 miles past the Red Barn and come on to the Cabot Trail at Englishtown or you can take the Celidh Trail and come up through Inverness on Route 19. If you decide to come to Pleasant Bay via Ingonish you shorten the last part of the trip by taking the exit 12 to the Englishtown Ferry and then follow the Cabot Trail from the other side of the bay. (Count $5 for the ferry). If you come up through Inverness you must make a sharp left as soon as you come on to the Island. You would take the Inverness turn off. This is the Celidh Trail turn off and well worth the decision. You will find the famous Red Shoe Pub (perhaps in time for lunch) in Mabou, the Celtic Interpretive Centre in Judique and the Cape Breton Centre of the Arts in Inverness. You will get on the Cabot Trail in Margaree Harbour. Remember to go across the beautiful new bridge when you get there - towards Cheticamp and Pleasant Bay! Then take a moment and visit the the Scare Crows in St. Joseph's, the new Mécareme Museum in Grand Etang, and Flora's in Point Cross. The Margaree's are also all beautiful to drive through; especially if you are a salmon or trout fisherman or like the sprawling river scenery. The Southern Gale Bed & Breakfast is opening in the spring of 2009 in Grande Etang if you should decide to stay in this area for a night!
